Balance

Too little and there will be naught to learn,
yet too much and the ordeal will only burn.

Still we must dance on this edge of a blade,
and arise again whenever we have strayed.

“Just enough” means exactly what we say:
do what is right, in the most balanced way.

Right

Should we strive to do things right,
or what is right as well as we might?

All the better if we can unite the two,
still, how often is that actually true?

Do we choose a fast journey to fame,
or a road with truth as our highest aim?

One path is certainly easier to master,
yet is not wrong done right a disaster?

No excuse will do at the end of the day;
our conscience will still have its say.

Remembrance

By the deeds unworthy of our souls,
do we dig shame’s engulfing holes.

Still, we must let our integrity show;
do we fall to despair or dare to grow?

Forgiveness may or may not be earned;
redemption is within the lesson learned.

Through this pain we recall our vow:
to never again such betrayal allow.

May we bear this remembrance well;
the choice between life and living hell.

Sing

Come my friend, sing for us your song;
Reawaken the hearts so we may all be strong.
Far or near, still right here… we will hear.

Come my friend, sing for us your song;
Remind us of what is right and what is wrong.
When we can see, we will be… truly free.

Come my friend, sing for us your song;
The truth unfolding has been within all along.
All that you bring, let it ring… come sing.

Potential

Many are the unformed paths that lay ahead;
Raw potential shaped by the way we thread.

The fearful routes offer the promise of dimished resistance,
At the price of an even less meaningful existence.

The roads less travelled call to the brave at heart;
A journey where peril and growth are never far apart.

Life deeply yearns for our wilful participation,
Awaiting our choices with great anticipation.

The Parallel

For better or worse, commerce is an integral part of society, but it also serves as a useful metaphor for life itself; We either pay upfront or we pay later, with interest and often hidden costs. To a parent this hopefully becomes a(p)parent sooner rather than later. We might say that children steal our present freedom through the care and attention that they require for proper development, and there is something to that.

But if we believe that the potential of life is greater than what is currently manifested, than that burden must be carried now. Our own evolution is deeply intertwined with that of the coming generations. Sacrifice is either made when necessitated or manyfold later, and perhaps too late then, by all parts involved.

In summary, the price for a meaningful life is either the responsibility we bear towards the realisation of it or by the torment of it’s absence, which exponentially grows into a black hole of despair and resentment.

Sincerity

Spare me not the truth by fearing to offend;
this is my request to you, beloved friend.
By the masquerades and shrouded lies,
the bond of kinship slowly withers and dies.
If something feels amiss, seek out why;
save the hearts from another broken goodbye.

Principles

Principles, from Latin: principia – that which comes first, is most important, is most necessary, chief, leading, foundation. The word clearly refers to that which is of prime importance and must come before anything else, however difficult it may be at times.

I feel that Martin Luther King Jr. summed up the concept best:

“Courage is an inner resolution to go forward despite obstacles.
Cowardice is submissive surrender to circumstances.
Courage breeds creativity; Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it.

Cowardice asks the question, is it safe?
Expediency ask the question, is it politic?
Vanity asks the question, is it popular?

But, conscience ask the question, is it right? And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.”
